AE Smith – Australia’s largest privately owned air conditioning and mechanical services company – are using their team work, excellence and focus developed from working on landmark projects and iconic sites to compete at international sporting events. Workplace team work was taken to a new level for AE Smith colleagues last weekend, dominating the Corporate Teams Race at the ITU Triathlon World Championships on the Gold Coast. Fielding 30 triathletes in the major sporting event, AE Smith’s teams of swimmers, cyclists and runners – that are ordinarily some of the country’s leading engineers, draftsmen and tradespeople – claimed five of the top ten finishes in the Corporate category.
With the most number of teams representing one company, AE Smith promised to make their mark at the premier triathlon event – and top performing teams from AE Smith offices in Melbourne, Brisbane and Mackay came away with a 2nd, 3rd and 6th place overall respectively in the Corporate Teams Triathlon race. “We were very proud to be competing in the AE Smith colours – and highlighting our commitment and dedication to performing well,” comments Team AE Smith Captain and Special Project Manager in the Brisbane AE Smith office, Martin Ross.

“Competing at a world class event such as this has been a great motivator and created strong teamwork amongst our offices,” adds Martin, who believes competing at such a high level for AE Smith produces great results on and off the sporting field. The ITU Triathlon World Championships was another setting for AE Smith’s continued focus on sports and wellbeing. The BRW Top 500 Private Company has developed an extensive employee program that places personal fitness at the top of the professional development agenda. A large proportion of AE Smith’s 700 + employees around Australia are now involved in running, swimming, rowing or cycling their way towards great team work. An extensive program of boot camps, fitness groups, triathlon teams and fun runs are offered to staff at all levels - all helping shape a positive and energetic corporate culture.
“The decision to use sport, fitness and well being as a means of developing staff is one that will continue to pay off for a long time – not just amongst our work place but for our clients as we bring better team work, problem solving and fit minds to the table,” says AE Smith CEO, Andrew Permezel. “The way the AE Smith triathlon teams competed on the weekend is testament to the positive culture we’ve developed and mirrors the approach we take with our clients in the building industry,” adds Permezel.
