For mechanical engineering / law student Ella, AE Smith is helping fast track her career
|
| | | Ella has shied away from typical part time jobs of university students and kick-started her career by taking on a trainee engineer role offered by AE Smith - Australia's largest privately owned air conditioning and mechanical services contractor.
"Working at AE Smith enables me to gain valuable experience in a field relevant to my studies", comments Ella, who's currently completing a double degree in Mechanical Engineering and Law at Monash University.
The specially designed permanent part-time role in AE Smith's Melbourne office has been created to provide career based opportunities for undergraduate engineers and help recruit the best up and coming talent.
"Being involved in the industry at such an early stage before I graduate helps me develop the skills I learn at uni and I really enjoy working in an environment that's relevant to my degree", she adds.
"Plus the knowledge I gain in this job puts me ahead of many other students because others do not have such practical experience at this stage of their studies".
Ella's part time position at AE Smith is highly flexible - with work hours scheduled around her university studies and exam times.
While a trainee role, Ella's work plays a vital part in many AE Smith projects around the country by researching and completing Operations & Maintenance manuals. Recently, Ella's contribution helped AE Smith complete air conditioning and mechanical services for the new observation deck at the top of the world's tallest residential building - Melbourne's Eureka Tower. Reporting directly to the Engineering Manager, Ella also enjoys the variety of working closely with engineers on scheduling and planning for projects from Hobart to Cairns.
The "hands on" experience is certainly something Ella values as a key stepping stone in developing a career in mechanical engineering - but she also appreciates the advice and mentoring from senior engineers at AE Smith.

"They provide me with a lot of guidance on issues in the construction and engineering industry and help me feel more confident making choices about areas to study at university and how to better plan my future career", comments Ella.
Now having worked in the trainee engineer role for just over 12 months, Ella is also enjoying the positive work environment at AE Smith - in particular the social club activities that have seen her participate with colleagues in paintball, darts, go karting and even ski trips. Ella is also taking an active role in the company's tree planting initiative with Greenfleet - "10,000 trees by 2010".
| "It's such an appealing part about working with AE Smith - it shows people that the company is interested in making us work well together, enjoy ourselves and committed to helping reduce the impact the air conditioning industry has on the environement".
