Ipswich may become known as the green capital of Australia following the inaugural Sustainability Expo, Smart Living 2009, scheduled for the end of July and early August.

Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said ‘Smart Living 2009', would promote healthy lifestyles while promoting the development of climate responsive design, construction, urban renewal concepts, education and school programs.

"What was simply an idea put to the Economic Development and Sustainability Committee back in March this year to make people’s lives cleaner, greener and healthier is looking like turning into a major event for the city and may pave the way for an annual Expo on sustainability issues in Ipswich.

“Ipswich City Council is one of the few local authorities within South East Queensland taking a lead role in promoting environmental sustainability which we believe to be the way to the future.

“The event will focus on sustainability programs, encouraging key future-oriented industries and promote Ipswich's innovations both nationally and internationally by the use of existing environmental approaches to management which also reduces pollution in our catchments.

“The Expo will promote healthy lifestyles while promoting the development of climate responsive design, construction, urban renewal concepts and education and school programs .

“It will encourage flexible designs, technological advancements, population dynamics and the lifestyle or our communities.”

Environment and Conservation Committee Chairperson Councillor Cheryl Bromage said a series of seminars throughout the Expo have been designed to educate people on addressing climate change, carbon emissions and positive steps which could be taken to reduce a city's carbon footprint.

Cr Bromage said the Expo would promote partnership opportunities between Council and public, private and community sectors on all levels.

“On a business level you can discover how your business can save money and become greener as you listen to speakers from all sectors of government, business and the community.

“This exciting seminar program will feature Michael Lutomski, Risk Manager from NASA’s International Space Station program.”

Cr Bromage said the expo would allow business and residential communities to participate in planned activities, and by doing so, learn how to reduce their carbon footprint efficiently and economically.

“Ipswich is an innovative leader in sustainable building and environmental living concepts. This Expo will allow Council to promote our local business partners and the great lifestyle opportunities we have here to the greater South East Queensland region and beyond.”
