The New Horizons Centre at Monash University in Melbourne will be a 19,500 sqm collaboration research centre for the development of leading edge manufacturing technology.

Developed as a joint venture between Monash University and CSIRO, the New Horizons project is a central and vital component of a vision to develop a Clayton Innovation Precinct as the most significant technology innovation hub in the southern hemisphere. Along with its high tech purpose, the New Horizons project will also be a cutting edge 6 Star Green Star building.

Working with architects, Lyons; Building Services company Umow Lai and ESD consultants Irwin Consult, AE Smith have recently been appointed as the Green Star Independent Commissioning Agent (ICA) to assist with achieving the 6 Star Green Star Building rating goal for the project.

The Green Star building rating system developed by the Green Building Council of Australia assess the sustainability of a buildings design and construction. It has versions to cover a wide range of building types.

The Green Star rating system requires an Independent Commissioning Agent to be engaged as early as possible in the project design phase.

“Our role as the ICA is to provide commissioning advice to the building owner and the design team throughout the design, construction and building tuning phases,” says Stuart Gibson, Melbourne AE Smith Construction Senior Engineer working on this project.

“We’ll also be involved in monitoring and verifying the commissioning of the building systems in accordance with industry recognised commissioning codes.”

Gibson, who along with AE Smith’s host of in house experts are excited by the challenge of working on this landmark 6 Star Green Star building:

“AE Smith are in a unique position to provide the ICA service because we can combine our various specialists from within our team such as Professional Chartered Engineers, Green Star Accredited Professionals, NABERS Accredited Assessors, qualified NEBB Supervisors and technicians to provide advice,” adds Gibson.

And while this is amongst the first of many ICA roles AE Smith will play, it’s anticipated this will become a key service:

“As Green Star projects become main stream and the commissioning process more stringent thanks to new requirements, the Independent Commissioning process will become more prevalent and influential in the future,” comments Gibson. “It’s a role AE Smith is well placed to advise our existing and new clients.”
