ESP looks to gas to help reduce emissions with minimum disruption

13 Sep 2010

Emerald Sustainable Performance (ESP) is recommending swapping HVAC equipment from electricity to gas powered in a bid to minimise disruption during certain retrofit projects.

Recently working with Australian Scholarships Group in Melbourne’s Oakleigh to develop plans for addressing their “mish mash” of ageing and ineffective air conditioning systems, the ESP team advised swapping from electricity to gas as a simpler way to reduce energy costs as well as a less intrusive retrofit.

“Often using technology to change over to gas systems means less disruptions and the building can be occupied during the retrofit works,” says Doug Binns of AE Smith’s ESP.

The Australian Scholarship Fund’s building is typical of many suburban Melbourne office buildings, with a variety of systems added over the years as a building’s capacity changes
and grows.

“There are thousands of buildings such as this one in suburban and regional areas that suit swapping equipment from electricity to gas as an easy way of reducing their carbon emissions,” adds Binns.

ESP recently worked with The Australian Scholarships Group to gain access to a Green Building Fund grant, finding ways to reduce CO2 emissions by 46%.
