Project Engineer

Recent Graduate Sam sees big opportunities working with a large company

For Sam, signing up to a Project Engineer role at AE Smith meant opening the doors to challenging and diverse experiences all over Australia.

"AE Smith is one of the country's largest air conditioning and mechanical services contractors so there's so much scope for varied work in varied locations", comments Sam, who initially started working with AE Smith in their trainee engineer program while completing mechanical engineering at
RMIT University.

Now in a full time position as a Project Engineer based in Melbourne, Sam has started looking after and designing his own projects as well as collaborating with teams on major Australian building projects such as the
MCG, Eureka Tower and Australian Synchrotron.

"But it's also the diversity of working on
small retail tenancies and even amazing multi million dollar residential properties for the rich and famous that's interesting too", adds Sam.

And while Sam can see himself working on diverse projects and roles with AE Smith in locations from Perth to Cairns, Auckland to even Indonesia, it's also the professional development opportunities large organisations offer that was a draw card to taking up the Project Engineer role.

"AE Smith provides ongoing professional development and training to ensure we're all aware of new technologies, processes and regulations as the industry evolves", says Sam.

"In fact, I'll soon be one of the first at AE Smith to become a
Green Star Accredited Professional so I'm better equipped to work on green building projects. The Green Star rating system designed by the Green Building Council of Australia is huge right now and will be in the future".

For Sam, starting his engineering career in the building industry with a company such as AE Smith was never part of his plan.

"When I was studying, I had no particular interest in any one industry", he reflects.

"But after working with AE Smith while at university, I gained insight into the expectations of engineers in the building industry and it showed me there's such a range of roles engineers can play which is really exciting", he adds.

Just as importantly, Sam enjoys collaborating with a team that spans nine offices throughout Australia and New Zealand.

"Working for a big company offers lots of different opportunities but really the biggest asset at AE Smith is the staff - everyone from the CEO down is approachable, helpful and enjoyable to work alongside".
