AE Smith Team on Hand to Deliver New Coal Loader

AE Smith’s reputation for delivering high quality projects from design phase to final commissioning has resulted in a unique contract with John Holland Constructions.

A new coal loading system at Abbot Point in Bowen, Queensland that required specialist ventilation systems is the latest project of the South East Queensland AE Smith Construction team that saw them involved from initial design and construction through to installation on site.

Contracted by John Holland Constructions on behalf of the Ports Corporation of Queensland, AE Smith’s design brief was to design and install a ventilation system for the coal loader’s electrical switch room and transformer room that could be maintained at a constant temperature.

“The electrical switch room contains all the equipment to drive every operating function of the loader, so maintaining a constant temperature to ensure nothing over heats and fails was a vital component of the project,” says AE Smith Project Manager, Michael O’Farrell.

AE Smith was also involved in the assembly process of the coal loader, which was created from scratch in a ship building yard in Brisbane, with all of the components for the machine delivered to a holding yard and fully assembled on site.

“Our HVAC equipment was specially built to withstand a very harsh operating environment as the coal loader is not only positioned on the end of a jetty approx two kilometres off shore, but it’s also a very dusty place to work due to the coal being loaded on open conveyor belts,” adds O’Farrell.

“To combat these conditions, conventional style air conditioning units were fully constructed from stainless steel and also treated with extra dust seals to withstand the salt laden and dusty environment while all our duct work was manufactured by AE Smith from stainless steel for the same reasons.”

AE Smith has a long and established presence throughout metropolitan and regional Queensland. With office located in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Mackay, Townsville and Cairns, AE Smith delivers a single source solution for air conditioning and mechanical services to landmark Queensland projects, buildings and institutions right across the State.

Examples include the Gold Coast Desalination Plant, Mater Hospital, 400 George Street, the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame and Qantas Founders Museum in Longreach, Northgoonyella Coal Mine, and James Cook University in Townsville.

The coal loader was initially commissioned in the construction yard in Brisbane and loaded onto a barge (pic above) for the three day journey to Bowen. It was then unloaded and lifted into position on the jetty and is currently undergoing final site commissioning.
